For most of the twentieth century, soil was treated like an inert substrate — a thing you added nutrients to. The microbiome revolution of the last two decades has rewritten that story.

A single teaspoon of healthy farmland soil contains more microorganisms than there are humans on earth. Mycorrhizal fungi extend the effective root system of a wheat plant by an order of magnitude. Free-living nitrogen fixers can supply 30–50 kg of nitrogen per hectare per year — for free.

When we till aggressively, fumigate, or carpet-bomb with synthetic nitrogen, we don't just kill weeds. We collapse a 4-billion-year-old metabolic network. The yield bump from fertilizers masks the underlying decline — until it doesn't.

The most exciting frontier in agriculture right now isn't another satellite or another sensor. It's learning, again, how to farm in partnership with the trillions of organisms already in the ground.
