Farmer Survey on Pesticide Use Practices
Conducted a field survey in Dhulikhel, Kavre to assess pesticide-use patterns, farmer awareness, safety practices, health effects, and pesticide management among local farming communities.
Methodology
Conducted field visits and interviews with 15 farmers and 5 agro-vets in Dhulikhel, Kavre. Collected primary data on pesticide application, pest identification, purchasing behavior, dosage and application practices, PPE use, pesticide-label reading, and perceptions of health and environmental risks.
Outcomes & Impact
The survey found that 70% of farmers identified pest and disease problems through field observation, while chemical control was the predominant management method (62.5%). All surveyed farmers purchased pesticides from agro-vets, with recommendations and previous experience being the main purchasing influences. Gaps were identified in pesticide-label reading, correct dosage, IPM knowledge, and awareness of restricted or banned pesticides. All surveyed farmers reported health symptoms after pesticide spraying, including dizziness, nausea, and headache. The study highlighted the need for farmer training, stronger IPM promotion, safer alternatives, and improved pesticide-use monitoring.
